"The Reading Protocols of Science Fiction"

By way of Paul Raven at Futurismic, here are a pair of intriguing articles from Jo Walton at Tor.com and Will Gillis at Human Iterations regarding how we read speculative fiction.

There's particular attention to the nature of world-building in science fiction stories, the issue of conceptual and linguistic density-and also the challenges these pose for readers who aren't science fiction fans. (Arguably those challenges have only grown over time, which may be one reason why older, Golden Age authors remain household names-and in the '80s, were bestsellers-in a way that the authors who would later be cutting-edge generally have not been despite their refinement and surpassing of the earlier concepts, and their greater polish.)
