New and Noteworthy (Stross and the Singularity Debate, Game of Thrones)

In today's edition:

* Charles Stross's latest blog post offers "Three arguments against the Singularity" - to the surprise of many, given the (inaccurate, but widespread) image of the Singularity Sky and Accelerando author as, in Stross's own words, "some kind of fire-breathing extropian zealot who believes in the imminence of the singularity, the uploading of the libertarians, and the rapture of the nerds."

Mike Anissimov of Accelerating Future has already penned a rebuttal, as Futurismic's Paul Raven reports with much amusement at this "Singularity slapfight."

* According to Airlock Alpha, HBO's fantasy series Game of Thrones has just closed its first season with an audience nearly twice the size of the viewership that watched the pilot's first airing (3.8 vs. 2.2 million).

HBO had decided on a second season long before this, but that certainly does not hurt the series's long-term prospects.
