December 21, 2012: An Update

When I posted here yesterday, December 21 was just coming to most of the planet. Now it has arrived everywhere - including the territories inhabited by the Mayans with whom the "prophecy" allegedly originated - while already departing those places where it arrived first. (In the western Pacific, it is already December 22.)

There has been no geomagnetic reversal, no collision with the supposed Nibiru, no alien invasion (so much for The X-Files, which unnecessarily dated itself in this regard), no eruption of a supervolcano. In the exceedingly unlikely event that Betelgeuse has gone supernova, we will not know of it for centuries - and be unaffected even then, while much the same can be said for just about all of the other "astronomical" events associated with this date.

Others claimed that what the date portended was not natural (or supernatural) catastrophe, but the moment of the technological Singularity, or alternatively, a mystical awakening not of machine, but human consciousness. There has been no sign of any such thing either.

Not only have these things not happened, but just as I said yesterday, they will not happen, either today, or in many cases, on any day within the lifetime of the universe.

Happy Winter Solstice.
