If part of the fun of a novel like Red Storm Rising was vicarious participation in that kind of game play, then an actually interactive version would be even more appealing. (And of course, games are less reliant, so that implausible stories aren't such a big liability.)Naderhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06937701625419069972noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-56517509827718842.post-53362685439441427832012-03-26T14:40:47.537-07:002012-03-26T14:40:47.537-07:00I'd suggest that one factor contributing to th...I'd suggest that one factor contributing to the decline of techno-thrillers has been the increasing sophistication and accessibility of computer games; allowing a player to simulate combat on every level from individual (Call Of Duty) to small-unit tactical (Company of Heroes) to global strategic (DefCon). The examples cited are by no means an exhaustive list; a player can find a game to fit any desired level of simulation accuracy, time period, and scale of activity. The cultural movements that made the escapist draw of techno-thrillers attractive are now being met by a different genre of entertainment entirely.

Indeed, Clancy saw this coming, which is why he got himself involved in the "Rainbow Six" series of video games. (In fact the naval-combat portions of the novel "Red Storm Rising" were mostly writeups of gaming sessions with Larry Bond, playing "Harpoon".)halojones-fanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05473935330204075559noreply@blogger.com
